Woodbury Rotary Club Regular Meeting
June 22, 2010
Today's Program
"Joe Fields Football, Life and Business"
Joe Fields, born in Woodbury, grew up in Deptford and played football at Gloucester Catholic. He played college football at Widener University and was drafted in the fourteenth round of the 1975 NFL Draft. Given little chance of making the Jets as a 14th round pick out of Widener, particularly when he showed up with baby fat ..... Joe had a stellar 14 years in the NFL as a long center/guard that included being a two-time Pro Bowl selection during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Joe’s presentation covered his growth as a football player that included his mastery of the wrestlers pretzel move.

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
The Woodbury Lunch and Breakfast Clubs have united for the purpose of raising funds to provide one ShelterBox for Haitian Earthquake Relief . A ShelterBox cost $1,000.00 delivered to the recipient. This is an unfunded challenge that we’ve accepted. Pres Jim and the members present at Tuesday's lunch meeting agreed to solicit the membership to raise our $500.00 share. The membership recommended that a $25 per member will reach our $500.00 goal

| President Jim Kelleher |
Sadly (for us), this is Jim's last weekly meeting as our President. Me, being a new guy and first time Bulletin Editor, just wanted to express my appreciation for his guidance and outstanding work this past year. Every week, like clockwork, Pres. Jim would send me his Weekly Letter, Quote of the Week and Rotary Factoid - always in my e-mail, every Sunday evening, and ready for me to transfer his words into our Bulletin. I have witnessed some extraordinary leadership under the direction of President Jim Kelleher. I think we have been fortunate and privileged to have Jim as our President for the 2009-2010 year. From all of us, Jim, thank you for your enthusiasm, dedication and friendship. Above all, thank you for a job well done! See you at the "Changing of the Guard" on the 29th.

| President Jim's Weekly Message |
Dear Woodbury Rotarians: As I preside over my last meeting as President, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support, hard work and guidance throughout the year. The local community, the international community and the Rotary Club of Woodbury have benefited from all of our efforts throughout the year. I personally have grown from my experience as serving as president. My hope going forward is the members continue to support and encourage our future leaders. The Rotary Club of Woodbury has made a significant leap in the right direction, so let's continue this momentum going forward.
Come celebrate a great year of service, while anticipating the future leadership of our club. The Rotary Club of Woodbury's annual changeover dinner will be held Tuesday, June 29th at Rotary Park from 5:30 PM to ???. Cost is $20/person. If you are paying by check, please make the check payable to: Woodbury Rotary Club. You can forward your payment to me or Gayle Henefer. A signup sheet is available.
Thanks again for all your efforts. Signing Off!!

Rotary has also succeeded because it has given men and women the opportunity to enjoy the trust and fellowship of one another while always reaching out. They reach out to their communities. They reach out to help young people and the elderly. They reach out to their communities. They reach out far beyond their own borders to those in need. And they do so in an organization that teaches them to broaden their thoughts and minds culturally, with a desire for world understanding and peace.

| Business Note of the Day |
Avalon is a borough in Cape May County, New Jersey, on Seven Mile Island. The town is one of the most affluent communities along the Jersey Shore and is home to some of the most expensive real estate on the east coast. In 2007, Forbes listed Avalon to be the 65th most expensive zip code in the United States. The Washingtonian magazine even named Avalon the "chicest beach" in the mid-Atlantic, the place to see women in diamonds and designer swimwear. The crowd is mostly upper class from the greater Philadelphia area. A small portion of Avalon is not on Seven Mile Island. It is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the United States 2000 Census, the full-time borough population was 2,143, although it swells during the summer months.
Avalon, famous for being a South Jersey seashore resort, has the motto "Cooler by a Mile", since it juts out into the Atlantic Ocean about a mile farther than other barrier island resorts. The motto also refers to the fact that Avalon occupies 4 miles of Seven Mile Island whereas neighbor Stone Harbor occupies 3. It was ranked the seventh best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium.

Thought for the Week
The Matthew effect (or "accumulated advantage") in sociology is the phenomenon where "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer". Those who possess power and economic or social capital can leverage those resources to gain more power or capital. The term was first coined by sociologist Robert K. Merton in 1968 and takes its name from a line in the biblical Gospel of Matthew: For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. -
Matthew 25:29, New Revised Standard Version
