Today's Program
The Rotary Foundation
Major Donor
B. Harold Smick, Jr. PDG 1984-1985 Jenna Steiner, Major Gifts Officer, Zone 32,
The Rotary Foundation
| Herb met Jenna in Chicago during his time serving on the "Council On Legislation." When Herb learned that Jenna would be in the area, he invited her to lunch. When our scheduled speaker was unable appear Herb asked Jenna to say a few words about the Rotary Foundation. Jenna described how contributions to Rotary Foundation funds enable Rotarians to carry out humanitarian and educational projects. Gifts may be directed to three main funds: the Annual Programs Fund, which supports the Foundation’s humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs worldwide; the Permanent Fund, which provides an endowment; and the PolioPlus Fund. |

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
The Woodbury Lunch and Breakfast Clubs have united for the purpose of raising funds to provide one ShelterBox for Haitian Earthquake Relief . A ShelterBox cost $1,000.00 delivered to the recipient. This is an unfunded challenge that we’ve accepted. Pres Jim and the members present at Tuesday's lunch meeting agreed to solicit the membership to raise our $500.00 share. The membership recommended that a $25 per member will reach our $500.00 goal

In Rotary, the ultimate power always reverts to the grassroots members of the local Rotary clubs. They can veto a decision by the Council on Legislation. They can either ratify or override the choice of the nominating committee for every elective office from the district governor to worldwide president. To some Rotarians, particularly those in newly established clubs in countries formerly having totalitarian regimes, Rotary is the first experience in democracy they have ever known.

| Business Note of the Day |
Silly Putty (originally called Nutty Putty) and also marketed by other companies as Thinking Putty, Bouncing Putty, Tricky Putty and Potty Putty), is the Crayola owned trademark name for a class of silicone polymers. It is marketed today as a toy for children, but was originally created by accident during research into potential rubber substitutes for use by the United States in World War II.
After its success as a toy, other uses were found. In the home, it can be used to pick up dirt, lint, and pet hair. The material's unique properties have found niche use in medical and scientific applications. It is used in large quantity by physical therapists for rehabilitative therapy of hand injuries. A number of other brands (such as Power Putty and TheraPutty) alter the material's properties, offering different levels of resistance. The material is also used therapeutically for stress reduction. Because of its adhesive characteristics, it was used by Apollo astronauts to secure their tools in zero-gravity.

Thought for the Week
"Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing." "No man or woman is an island. To exist just for yourself is meaningless. You can achieve the most satisfaction when you feel related to some greater purpose in life, something greater than yourself." Dr. Denis Waitley
