Today's Program
"Wild Turkey Hunting"
|
|
We learned many interesting facts about Wild Turkeys – that Ben Franklin once promoted the Wild Turkey to be the choice for our National Bird .. but the Bald Eagle won that contest! Also, Wild Turkeys, due to the construction of the eyes in their head can actually see 300 degrees, while looking straight in one direction!
Relatively new to turkey hunting, Randy found it to be challenging, exciting and addictive. Wild turkey’s senses are extremely keen. Its eyesight and hearing are among the best in the woods. This is the challenge that makes turkey hunting so intriguing and attracted Randy to the sport. Randy’s presentation included a detailed explanation of the elements of Turkey hunting:
Scouting
Before you can hunt wild turkeys, you’ve got to find them. Field scouting begins after you have identified several possible hunting spots.
Camouflage
Because wild turkeys have such keen vision, camouflage is almost a must to avoid being seen.
Shotguns and Ammunition
The best shotgun and ammunition for turkey hunting is the combination that delivers a dense, hard-hitting pattern at 40-45 yards. Before hunting, pattern your shotgun to see which choke, brand of ammunition and shell load produces the most uniform pattern and density.
Calls and Calling
Good calling and knowing when to call are often critical keys to success in turkey hunting. Hunters typically imitate hens to call a gobbler into gun range. Hens make a variety of calls: yelps, clucks, cuts, purrs and whines.out.
The Hunt
Once you locate a gobbler, the next step is to move in close and call him into gun range. Your goal is to slip as close as possible without spooking him. Then you "set up" and attempt to call him close enough for a shot.

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
|
 |
The Woodbury Lunch and Breakfast Clubs have united for the purpose of raising funds to provide one ShelterBox for Haitian Earthquake Relief . A ShelterBox cost $1,000.00 delivered to the recipient. This is an unfunded challenge that we’ve accepted. Pres Jim and the members present at Tuesday's lunch meeting agreed to solicit the membership to raise our $500.00 share. The membership recommended that a $25 per member will reach our $500.00 goal

| President Jim's Weekly Message |
|
Dear Woodbury Rotarians: Today's quote: "Strength in Numbers" was the theme of Saturday's Rotary Park clean-up. Our club not only had a strong showing, but each member was focused and worked hard to improve the grounds at Rotary park. It's always great to see what our club can accomplish when we work together. Our next club challenge will be occurring within 2 weeks. The Woodbury Community Yard Sale and Spring Planting at the Epple Garden will be held at Rotary Park, Saturday, April 24th from 9-2 PM. Members are requested to donate 2-3 items. Donated items can be dropped off in advance to ROMAR Tire (located right behind Walgreens). Flyers for the event are available to post in store fronts, pass out to the public, and submit for advertising in church bulletins. Help is needed from each member to help market the event. Let's all get involved to make this a great event. For the Good of Rotary,

Since 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. Five million children destined to be polio victims are walking today and enjoying a better life because of global immunization. Reported polio cases have dropped 99.8%- from 350,000 a year in1988 to fewer than 2,000 a year today- and only four countries - Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan- remain endemic.

| Business Note of the Day |
|
Salt water taffy is a soft taffy originally produced and marketed in the Atlantic City, New Jersey, area beginning in the late 19th century. Despite the name, it does not contain salt water. The legend of how salt water taffy got its name is disputed. The most popular story, although probably questionable, concerns a candy-store owner, Bradley Swift, whose shop was flooded during a major storm in 1883. His entire stock of taffy was soaked with salty Atlantic Ocean water. When a young girl came into his shop and asked if he had any taffy for sale, he is said to have offered some "salt water taffy." At the time it was a joke, because all his taffy had been soaked with salt water, but the girl was delighted, she bought the candy and proudly walked down to the beach to show her friends. Bradley's mother was in the back and heard the exchange. She loved the name and so Salt Water Taffy was born.

Thought for the Week
|
|
A dog had followed his owner to school. His owner was a fourth grader at a public elementary school. However, when the bell rang, the dog sidled inside the building and made it all the way to the child's classroom before a teacher noticed and shooed him outside, closing the door behind him. The dog sat down, whimpered and stared at the closed doors. Then God appeared beside the dog, patted his head, and said, "Don't feel bad fella'... they won't let ME in either."
