Today's Program
"The History of Truck Renting"
| Tony presented a very interesting program on the history of the trailer & truck rental industry. We learned that the industry is relatively young, brought into existence by the gentlemen that brainstormed U-Haul Trailers in 1945. Tony talked about the challenges of the business and some of the techniques he uses to keep his business, as an Independent Truck Rental Dealer, competitive with the giants of the industry. As usual, it turns out some of the best programs presented at Rotary are from our own members! |

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
The Woodbury Lunch and Breakfast Clubs have united for the purpose of raising funds to provide one ShelterBox for Haitian Earthquake Relief . A ShelterBox cost $1,000.00 delivered to the recipient. This is an unfunded challenge that we’ve accepted. Pres Jim and the members present at Tuesday's lunch meeting agreed to solicit the membership to raise our $500.00 share. The membership recommended that a $25 per member will reach our $500.00 goal

When the United States enters World War I, it needed people to arrange entertainment and hospitality programs for soldiers in camps awaiting shipment to Europe. The government quietly brought Rotary leaders to Washington one weekend, and within 24 hours they had the entire project organized and over 100 Rotarians across the country committed to running it. The Rotary Club of Philadelphia's Army and Navy Club served troops hot meals daily- as many as 500 would show up for Sunday lunch- and provided free sleeping accommodation for 188 men.

| Business Note of the Day |
Some of our favorite refreshing beverages carry some of the heftiest retail markups. Bottled water is wildly popular -- Americans spent $16 billion on the ubiquitous drink in 2007 -- and it's wildly overpriced, considering that 40 percent of bottled water is nothing but filtered tap water. In fact, for the price of a single bottle of Evian bottled water, you could pay for 1,000 gallons (3,785.4 liters) of municipal tap water. With bottled water, you're not paying for the H2O, but rather the packaging and the convenience. But the biggest beverage markup of them all belongs to wine in restaurants. The average retail markup on a bottle of wine in a restaurant is 300 percent.
